English summary: The Jewish author Philo of Alexandria (d. c. 50 CE) left behind an extensive body of writings in the Greek language, of which a larger number are biblical exegetical works and a smaller number are philosophical treatises. One of his main intellectual pursuits was the combination of biblical exegesis and philosophy, which can been seen in tracts like "The Life of a Statesman or On Joseph." Philo offered a philosophical re-imagining of the biblical narrative of Joseph, in which Joseph is viewed as a type of Hellenistic ruler. In this reimagining, he presents three digressions from the main narrative to consider issues of the ethics and self-understanding of a politician in a democratically established city-state. What emerges from these considerations is a political philosophy about the two types of ancient statesmen, one who rules a territory and the other active in the polis, both of whom must consider questions of justice and the proper execution of their public offices. Philo's Joseph-commentary is the only ancient work that offers a comparison between these two types of politicians, and constitutes an important contribution to ancient political thought. The only German translation of Philo's Joseph commentary was produced in 1909. In this new, modernized German translation, Lang offers an extensive introduction, a glossary of Philo's chief concepts and as well as the first commentary on this work. Tatsachlich ist Philos Josefsschrift das einzige antike Werk, das diese beiden Typen des Politikers gleichzeitig behandelt.
