Made up of more than seven thousand islands, the Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean. a geographically diverse nation, the Philippines contains large, modern cities, quiet rural villages, and remote islands communities. the country is home to approximately 83 million people from more than eighty ethnic groups, giving the nation a rich cultural heritage. Most Filipinos trace their roots to the Asian mainland or to early island kingdoms located west of the Philippines. Malays--who came from the territories of present-day Indonesia and Malaysia--are the largest group to have established communities on teh islands. These Malays and other immigrants form the many ethnic roots of the modern Filipino population.
