The site of Philippi was occupied for an unusually long period of time, thanks to both its strategic location between Macedonia and Thrace and its wealth of resources. In the Early Neolithic period, this wealth was exploited by a community of humans living in the place known as Dikili Tash. In the Archaic and Classical periods, the metal deposits of the Pangaion Hills appealed to the greed of the Thasians, Persians, Athenians and then the kings of Macedonia. There followed a series of foundations and varied political experiences under the names 'Datos', 'Krenides', and finally 'Philippi'. After the battle of 42 BC, Philippi became a Roman colony; the arrival of a core Roman population transformed the look of the town for several centuries. The Apostle Paul's visit in the AD 40s contributed to the development of the proto-Byzantine and then Byzantine town, which became a place of pilgrimage. The contributions to this volume bring together the knowledge that has resulted from one hundred years of archeological and historical research, in the fields of environment and landscape, urbanism and architecture, institutions, religion, and society. The site of Philippi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016.
