Pew Potato

Have you ever planted a potato? It doesn't take much. You place one in the soil, and before long, it multiplies. Potatoes don't demand much attention, and they grow best when left alone. That's good news if you're a gardener. But in the life of a church, this pattern can be dangerous.

Over the years in ministry, I have seen far too many pew potatoes. These are the men and women who faithfully show up on Sunday, fill their place in the sanctuary, and consume everything offered to them-sermons, songs, and fellowship dinners-yet never move beyond the pew into the mission of Christ.
