Browning's Petra is out of date, but worth a look.

Ian Browning's Petra is longwinded, out of date and at times completely wrong. It does, however, contain some of the reconstruction illustrations of the ancient Nabataean capital ever done. Browning also devotes a sizable portion of the book to presenting the inhabitants of this ancient commercial capital as living breathing people. This is more than just guidebook and visitors to Petra have much to thank Browning for. The book is still readily available in Petra, should you get the opportunity to visit the enchanting and magical "rose red city, half as old as time."
