A Wonderful Story from an Interesting Perspective

Peter The Drug Dog is a First-Dog account of what life is like for a working drug detection dog. In one sense, it is quite educational, since it approaches the training and experiences of a working dog from the dog's perspective. On another level, it is a touching account of the bond between a man and his dog that is both strong and emotional. Parts of the narrative are extremely funny, while other parts are quite sad. I think this book compares quite favorably to The Art of Racing in the Rain and others of this genre. I appreciated the straight forward writing style and all the real life anecdotes. Peter lived more in ten years than most people live in a lifetime. This is a terrific book!

THIS IS ONE YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS! BEAUTIFUL STORY AND SO WELL WRITTEN!

Every so often you get lucky with books and come across a read that absolutely grabs and charms you before you finish the first three pages. This work by Hank Nolin, Peter, the Drug Dog, is one of those books. Try as I might, and I did indeed try, I could not find one thing to criticize in this entire book. On the contrary, it is one of the best "dog books" I have read in years. This is the story of Peter, a remarkable Labrador retriever who is a drug detection dog and the story is told completely though Peter's eyes. The book begins with the first memories of Peter. The reader is taken through the growing up years which includes his very specialized training, the bonding process with his "best friend" Hank. We then continue inside Peter's head as he leads his often times exciting, and always fulfilling life. We are treated to a dog's view of us humans along with Peter's attitude toward his work mates, both human and nonhuman, his approach and attitude toward fatherhood and most of all his absolutely loyalty and love for his best friend Hank, and of course Hank's absolutely loyalty and love for his best friend Peter. We follow these two individuals, Peter the dog and Hank his handler, to over a dozen different countries and twenty-nine states. Now please don't get the idea that this is a "cops and robbers" type of book...oh no, no, no...it is far more than that! This is a story of a relationship between two best friends. It is hilarious in places and series in others. The author has made no attempt that I could detect, to elaborate and turn a great true tale into a "fishing or war" story. This is simply good stuff...honest story telling at its best. There are several aspects of this work that need to be noted. First, I have absolutely no idea of the author's academic background, but my goodness can this man write. Hank Nolin was/is the owner of a large security agency in Florida, one that specializes in detection dogs. There is no doubt in my mind, had he chosen to do so, Nolin could have made a very good living as a writer. This book is his first work and I must tell you that it far surpasses quite a number of best selling authors we have with us today in quality of prose, syntax and pure story telling ability. This is impressive stuff folks! This author has great skill with the pen and our language. Secondly, I consider myself an expert in very few areas but I do know dogs. I have lived with them, trained them, worked with them and cared for them for well over 60 years. As I write this there are three of them curled up at my feet. I can promise you that I do know dogs, if little else! Nolan, I must admit, has me beat! This author has an uncanny ability to reach inside the mind of a dog and the ability to articulate what he has found there. Any "dog person" will spot this gift immediately upon beginning this work. My neighbor who lives across the road and across the ditch is our cities' canine police officer who han
