Peter Doig: House of Music

Doig's lyrical paintings, inspired by his time spent in Trinidad, reckon with the sounds, sights and spaces of music and its role in communities

Published with Serpentine Gallery, London.

Designed to imitate a 12-inch record sleeve, this monograph brings together early and recent works by British artist Peter Doig (born 1959) that illustrate his profound engagement with music. Each selected painting engages with music in a different way: Some depict spaces where music is played or heard, others show musicians performing or people dancing. Doig made many of these works during his years spent living in Trinidad, from 2002 to 2021, a period that deepened his engagement with the auditory medium through his exposure to sound system culture and cinema. These paintings are joined by new works created specifically by Doig for the accompanying show at Serpentine Galleries. Blending personal memory, found photographs and imagined scenes, the works in House of Music are shaped by the wider cultural context of Trinidad.
