Before any Yom Tov Seder, I was privileged to help my mother's mother, bobeh Rose, in her kitchen. Bobeh had a compilation of traditional recipes stored in her head, passed down from her mother. Recipes that have been passed down from mother to daughter for many generations. Sadly, a little was lost with each generation. Unfortunately in 1972, bobeh got sick and never recovered. She passed away later that year, taking all those delicious recipes with her. Bobeh never kept a hard copy of her recipes and I thought that was the end of the era. Those recipes of yesteryear were now gone forever. Many years later and by pure accident, I came across a Jewish cookbook from the early Nineteen hundreds. This book contained those bygone recipes, many of which were the same as bobeh Roses, plus more. Life works in mysterious ways. The problem was that they wrote them in an era when electricity was a luxury and hypermarkets were unheard of. You had to make everything yourself if you needed something and your local general dealer did not have it. Besides that, their writing was very descriptive, which made it difficult to follow these recipes. Much of the older terminology does not exist today. It felt as though it had given me a second chance. A chance to bring back those bygone recipes, for all twentieth-century Jewish housewives. A book that will hopefully get passed down from mother to daughter for generations. It is with great pleasure, and immense pride, that I announce the birth of Bobeh's Secrets, a revised and modernised version of "The International Jewish Cookbook" which is the best and most complete kosher cookbook ever printed.
