This book presents a contemporary approach to personality psychology by integrating current methods, theoretical paradigms, and empirical findings in a manner that is both accessible and relevant to... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book is an excellent review of the theoretical traditions underlying the study of personality and the resulting research that has been stimulated by them. After presenting the scientific method, the authors fairly relate the outlook of the psychodynamic, trait, humanistic, learning, and cognitive-learning schools of thought. Although not fans of Freud, the authors give his concepts a thorough review. Diving into research, this book is not breezy reading but if you want a good understanding of current thinking and research on personality, I believe you will find the text intellectually stimulating and revealing, causing you to reflect on your own personality and that of others you know. I dare anyone to get through this book without exclaiming at least once , "hey! that's me!". Not only are topics covered thoroughly but graphics frequently present research results in a clear way and the authors are at pains to present all sides of an issue. I received an education from this book and have searched out other readings referred to in it. Though I bought it for a psychology course, I intend to keep it. My only wish is that the developmental theory of Erikson had been presented.
