Personal assistance, as understood within the self-determined living movement, describes a model designed to meet the support needs of people with disabilities. The aim of personal assistance is to enable self-determined living and lifestyle choices, allowing those affected to meet their individual needs and live according to their own aspirations. The author describes the models of personal assistance in Carinthia and their development over the last 10 years. Drawing on communication studies and grounded in social constructionism, the author deconstructs concepts such as disability, examines media influences, and discusses the concept of perception and the use of language.
