Six hours are missing from Dr. Nora Willison's life.
Her badge says she was at the hospital. A nurse watched her carry a paper folder into a locked ward at 7:00 in the evening and carry it out, open, minutes later.
She remembers none of it.
She has an explanation ready, and she wants it badly. Six years ago her hands shook. A cure built from an alien transmission gave them back, and she took it herself, and she became its public face because she was the proof.
Then the patients start walking.
Twenty-one of them, out of six hospitals. Unhurried, in gowns and work clothes. Nobody speaking. Nobody running. Not one of them walking away. Every one of them aimed at the same four miles of empty sky, and so is a woman four hundred miles off, eyes open, in her dining room.
Nothing attacks anyone. Nothing is destroyed. By April, Memphis is dark and sealed on Nora's own recommendation, and inside the wire the buses still run on time.
It does not hide. It does not hurry. And when it finally explains itself, it will make a case she cannot break.
Nora writes everything on paper. Paper is the one thing nobody has edited.
She is the only person alive qualified to investigate what is happening to her patients.
She is also the one person she cannot rule out.
