A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out at the "Augusto Ram n Fraga Coloma" Polyclinic, El Cangre settlement, G ines municipality, between November 2007 and March 2008 to determine the prevalence, severity and risk factors associated with periodontal disease. The periodontal status of 202 individuals of both sexes between 19 and 35 years of age was assessed using the Russell PI in the WHO revised form. Oral hygiene was determined by the Greene and Vermillion Oral Hygiene Index. Oral examination was performed by the researcher in the homes of the individuals surveyed. The information was processed in an Excel table. In the processing, the X 2 dummy and Duncan's multiple comparison were applied. The prevalence of periodontal disease was 71.8% with a predominance of disease occurrence without pocket formation. Infrequent visits to the dentist predominated.
