Mira Jamison has lived many lives, spanning from 13th century Cordova during the Spanish Reconquista to present day Chicago. Some of those lives were long and fruitful; others were cut short by the hands of others. In each life, she grows more repulsed by mankind's propensity for violence, and more frustrated at her inability to help the victims. Mira's final life is marred by tragedy when, as a young child, she watches helplessly as her best friend is raped and killed. Her need to make a difference grows stronger until as an adult, she leaves a successful career to work with the residents of a women's shelter for victims of domestic abuse. However, just as she feels she's beginning to make an impact, her closest colleague is brutally murdered and she spirals into despair.Then Mira begins to notice odd coincidences and meet mysterious strangers who hint that there is a way. Sensing that her only hope of helping mankind is on the other side, Mira makes the ultimate leap of faith, jumping from a bridge high above the cold, murky waters of the Chicago River to her eventual destiny in the afterlife.
