As he moves into the small Sussex village, Thomas Cordwell reflects that none of the residents he is meeting is aware that he had any previous knowledge of Westenbury, much less that he owns a photograph of Loaders cottage when his great grandfather lived in it over a hundred years before. He had not mentioned this in December 1987 when he came to view it. It had been altered in the 1930's but was more recognisable now that removal of the bay window more recently had changed it back to how it must have been. Settling in, he becomes more involved in his new life than he expected in the first few months.
