A VERY WELL DONE AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND INTERESTING SUBJECT

To begin this review, I must let the reader know just where I am coming from. While I do count myself as a Christian, I do not by any stretch of the definition or imagination count myself in the ranks of the Pentecostals. Bless their hearts, they have their thing; I mine. I do count as friends a number of this persuasion though, and the study of various denominations within the Christian Faith has always been a sort of hobby of mine...I find it fascinating. It should also be know that I hold absolutely no animosity nor ever make any statement or perform any act to "put down," criticize or belittle anyone's particular faith, lack of faith, or indifference...what ever the case may be. For me this study is enlightening, amusing at times, and helps me to better understand people. Anyway..... This autobiographical work by George W. Flattery, Sr. is actually one of the better written works in this particular genre that I have run across for quite sometime now. Rev. Flattery is a rather straight forward sort of guy and his writing reflects this. The author is also a man of great faith and his work also reflects this from every page. You may not agree with his particular brand of faith, that is okay, but you will certainly admire Flattery's dedication and persistence. This is George Flattery's life story as told through his eyes. The author was born in Clearwater, Kansas in 1914 (he is 78 years old at the time of the writing of this work), and began his ministry in 1931, The good Pastor spent from 1944 to 1964 working in as a pioneer missionary to French West Africa. The author has never, by his own admission, done anything else as a vocation. There are several things that set this work apart from others of its Ilk. First, I was unable to detect one iota of hypocrisy in any of his words or deeds. This guy more or less tells it like it is, warts and all. Secondly, I was amazed and impressed at the details provided in this work as to the various aspects of his calling; so many of these books are merely lists of "souls saved" by location and date...not so here, no, no, no! The author goes much further in his description of help rendered his congregation, the frustrations involved and how he and his wife and family met these frustrations. Thirdly, the book is actually quite well written; admittedly the syntax is from another age, but this makes in all the more interesting. For those of the Pentecostal persuasion, this will be a dandy read for you. For those just wanting a bit of church history, there is that too. For those who are looking for a bit of inspiration...goodness, you may not believe in the word this man is preaching, but you will certainly admire the man.
