How do penguins navigate? What do they eat and how do they find it? How does the Emperor Penguin, breeding in the depth of winter, survive without food for half a year? This is the first volume in a new series based on work already achieved in the Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds. It offers a concise, more readable and fully illustrated version of the entries on penguins in Volume One of HANZAB. Penguins of the World includes all 17 species found throughout the world, from the Fairy Penguins of the famous Penguin Reserve on Phillip Island, Victoria, to the spectacular King Penguin. As well as offering a general introduction to penguins, Pauline Reilly retains the major features of HANZAB such as description, habitat, distribution, population, food, behaviour and breeding, while omitting some of the more highly detailed, scientific information. This book is a perfect introduction to this appealing bird family. Suitable for children and tourists as well as ornithologists.
I wrote this fully-researched book for people who need an easy introduction to penguins. Much of the information comes from HANZAB, the Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds, (OUP). All facts relevant to all species are encapsulated in an early chapter. Then for each genus, facts common to those species in the genus, followed by a section for each species. The book covers all penguins from the Antarctic to the Galapagos Islands on the equator, as well as all those in the temperate climes of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America. You don't need any knowledge of penguins to understand this book. It can even be used by upper primary school children researching projects. Because penguins are such interesting and amazing creatures, the books is fun to read. Just feel glad that you're not an Emperor Penguin engaged in breeding in the Antarctic winter, standing on ice, incubating an egg on your feet and unable to get to sea to feed for four to five months!!
