Excellent instructions for anyone interested in improving their skills with pen and ink drawing!

This book doesn't take long to read. A few hours at the most, and you have read what Alphonso has to say. . . . But this is not a novel to be read. It is an EXCELLENT instruction manual to teach how to approach drawing with pen and ink. I have several books that show beautifully executed drawings in pen and ink. They talk about different strokes they have made and make comments about what they have done. Alphonso starts by talking about materials. (Most authors start there.) Then he talks about different kinds of strokes. He shows examples of several mark making exercises and reminds you that it is boring, but do it anyway. Then he gets into the really important part of showing how light affects shapes, and how he thinks about how the light hits the shapes, and shows how to give your drawings form by shading. He not only shows what he does, but he shows the steps from beginning to end, and what he thinks about along the process. I am learning so much by doing the exercises. You won't be disappointed. If you follow the steps he outlines, you will see improvement in your art QUICKLY!
