Peeper Has a Fever (Dr. Hippo Story) Peeper the little frog is very excited to go to the Picnic and Diving Contest, but his plans are ruined when his mother discovers that he has a fever and calls the doctor. Peeper is very disappointed that his mother and little sister Lily are going off to the picnic without him, but with some gentle care and company from his father he'll soon be feeling better. And when his mother returns with the news that rain has postponed the Diving Contest, Peeper may still get a chance to win a ribbon after all. Peeper's parents work together to help him in this story, and it's Peeper's dad who stays home to care for him and cook dinner while Peeper's mom takes his sister to the picnic. It's a wonderful example of shared responsibilities for both children and adults alike, and shows how fathers as well as mothers can help to comfort a sick child. Like the other books in the Dr. Hippo Series, Peeper Has A Fever can also help children understand what is happening to them when they are sick and reduce their worry. It clearly explains some of the confusing things about having a fever, such as feeling too cold instead of too hot. There is also a guide for parents included as a separate booklet, Figuring Out Your Child's Fever, with very sensible and helpful advice on dealing with fevers, which can often be confusing and disturbing to parents. The parent's guide alone makes Peeper a good gift for new or expectant parents, including those adopting children older than infancy, since it contains guidelines for treating children of all ages.

I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE the Dr. Hippo series of books! They are a must have for any parent or those who care for young children. The stories are easy to read and understand for children. The artwork is colorful, cheery and adoable. I found the parent information section in the back pocket a must have. I learn a lot about everyday ailments that I never knew before. I love these books!

Reviewed by Cayden (age 4) and Max (age 2) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (6/08) "Peeper Has a Fever" is about a frog named Peeper who develops a fever on the day that he is supposed to go to a picnic. His mom calls Dr. Hippo who tells her that a fever signals the start of an infection and that Peeper may develop other symptoms soon. Peeper has to stay home from the picnic but he is well in time to attend the diving contest which had been postponed for a few days. Cayden: "Another Dr. Hippo book! I like these!" Max: "Hippo book!" Cayden: "Why does he feel hot?" Max: "Hot!" Cayden: "We shouldn't go places when we are sick so our friends don't get sick too." Max: "Ice cream!" Cayden: "Yes Max, he gets ice cream because his temperature is too high." Cayden: "Peeper is sad because he can't go to the Picnic. I would be sad if I had to stay home too." Cayden: "That was nice of them to bring him back balloons." Cayden: "Look! He has red spots! I think it is a rash!" Parent's comments: "Peeper Has a Fever," by Charlotte Cowan, is another fun book from the Dr. Hippo series. Not only is the book educational for children but it also helps to educate parents about fevers through both the story and through the handy pull-out guide at the end of the book. The supplemental guide addresses such issues as how to take a temperature, when to call the doctor, and how to help your child feel better. Written by a pediatrician, this book is an excellent resource to refer to when dealing with a fever in a child. Children will love the colorful illustrations and the storyline as well!
Favorite one!

As a big fan of the Dr. Hippo series, this one is my favorite. How many times as parents (or physicians for that matter) have we been faced with a child with a high fever who feels terrible? In this story we have a wonderful example of what TO do, and we see it played out with a very involved father. Like all the Dr. Hippo books, the illustrations are marvelous, creating a full, imaginative world where different animals live together. I am collecting them all!

Dr Cowan's set of colorful animal storybooks is a must for all families and libraries to own. Her gentle, wise and witty words will appeal to children and parents alike. Children will relate to the animal characters' experiences as their own, whether suffering a fever, cold or earache. The pediatric information is comforting and sound. Looking forward to Dr. Cowan's future storybooks on common childhood ilnesses!
