Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia

Among textbooks pretty hard to find on this subspecialty in anesthesia,it is very close to the best. In addition to the basic topics like history, embryology, physiology and pharmacolgy,it covers medicine-related subjects like pediatric echo,ECG for preoperative approach and cardiac & respiratory care, especially pulmonary hypertensive crisis,ECMO and assist devices for postoperative period. Intraoperatively,it details on monitoring, CPB and possible problems. The book also goes deep to outstanding anomalies eg. transposition of great vessels, hypoplastic left heart, heart and lung transplant, etc. Despite 1998 edition,it has details of NO,PG,aprotinin, etc, which are still update. It also adds one chapter for noncardiac surgery. However, it does not say about concordance, caudal MO, BIS monitoring, positioning for close heart surgery, pH- VS alpha-stat,for example. Occasionally I have to do more research on the long-term outcome of each operation and the unique complications like after Fontan to answer residents and family. Clinically, the contents are enough for most pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists to get along with surgeons. It is a real need to read more than Miller's.
