After 112 years of active service, Immanuel Lutheran Church, located three miles southeast of Cole Camp, disbanded. The last Sunday service was held on Christmas Day, 1955. The remaining members transferred their membership to neighboring congregations. The cemetery continues to live on as an important part of the community. It is one of the most historic properties in the area. Not only due to its church affiliation but due to its proximity to the June 19, 1861 Civil War skirmish known as the Battle of Cole Camp. The cemetery is the eternal home for the bodies of many soldiers who lost their lives while valiantly fighting to save their freedom and properties. Possibly the most distinctive feature of the cemetery is the burial mound of the seventeen unknown soldiers who lost their lives in that fateful battle. This book pays tribute to the names and faces of Historic Monsees Cemetery.
