Peace A Cosmic Fantasy

By the twenty sixth century, after many millennia of war and conflict, Earth was finally at peace; people of all nations had come together to fight their common enemies. Catastrophic climate change with the resulting natural disasters, which they had caused, and global pandemics that killed billions. For the first time in human history, the endless cycle of self-destruction, that had dominated life on for so long, was over.
At first all seemed well, the reduced population and rapid scientific advances led to comfortable and long lives. But such utopias have a cost, in the form of resources, some of which became increasingly rare. In response, what had always been a fledgling space industry, used almost exclusively for military purposes, became very important. Space, or at least the solar system and the resources it contained, was seen as the solution.
Over the following two centuries, rapid developments and advancements in all related technologies saw the growth of a solar system wide mining and processing operation. Along with it came the first real off world colony, on Mars and several other smaller outposts. Autonomous cargo craft endlessly delivering mined ores to huge processing facilities on the moon. The resulting refined resources were then shipped to Earth; the whole system designed to keep the new comfortable world and its population alive and heathy.
The planet and its population was saved, life could go on, but many realised that nothing lasts forever. Sooner or later the human race would have to step out into the cosmos. The very idea stimulated a whole new debate and gave birth to a belief in many, that they should do that anyway; believing it was the human race's destiny. By the end of the twenty ninth century what started as thoughts and dreams became reality.
A programme of ten flights, carrying over sixty thousand pioneers, set out to the new frontier. What greeted them was a far cry from the world of peace they had left behind. Survival depended on a way of life long forgotten and unknown to most. Deep seated instincts were their only hope for survival as they faced up to a reality they had long forgotten.
