This six-part, 287-minute presentation is my second introduction to P.D. James. Naturally, I had to buy the book. Naturally, the book is better. However, that doesn't distract from the film, which takes the time to tell the story and keeps you glued to the screen. I'm continuing to discover a new favorite and plan to work my way through the rest of the films. I'm watching the films in order, not the books.
Even with the length of this story, they had to cut corners. Still, in some parts, it was like reading the book verbatim. The film also omits mentioning that Chief Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh is wealthy in his own right.
The story is somewhat convoluted. There are quite a few characters, and they all seem guilty. It looks like everyone had an opportunity to commit the crime. Chief Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh (Roy Marsden) has a way of making everyone confess and seeing right through you.
Inspector Adam Dalgliesh is recovering from a wound he received on duty. He's also feeling depressed and thinking about quitting his job. A friend invites him to stay at a nursing home (Toyton Grange) and hints that there are some mysterious happenings. Soon, people are dying from what appear to be convenient accidents.
O. Okay, for those who read the book, you might find the ending a little different and a page shorter. But it's close enough for TV.
Some of the scenery in East Anglia along the North Sea will rival the actors and the story for your attention.
