"A rich and compelling story."~ Connie Vines, award-winning novelist

Madge Walls' has penned the perfect mix of mid-life choices and self-discovery--all set on the lush island of Maui! "Paying the Price" has a wealth of information about being a Realtor, but it also strikes at the heart of what it means to be a Mother. This novel gives us a glimpse behind the illusion of "paradise": The death of the "perfect" marriage; aging parents living in their past, a child's return to the nest and having to work to financially survive. I couldn't put this novel down! Connie Vines

Suspense, Life Decisions, and More...

This was a great book with characters you could really relate to. It was easy to get drawn into this book, I just wanted to know what was going to happen next. There are several twists in this book that took me by surprise. Our book club also enjoyed discussing the book as there were many points of view to discuss. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read.

Paying the Price

This book paints Hawaiian life in bright colors. She showed us everyday life of a Realtor, the struggles of mothering a difficult adolescent and keeps the narrative tension on every page. I went to sleep at three AM the night I finished this book. And for a first fiction, it's amazing.

A unique view of contemporary Maui

Paying the Price is first of all a great read, well written and full of drama and detail about the life of a nice woman who loves her troubled daughter and has to cope with crisis and maintain her own values while earning a living as a Realtor on the island of Maui. For those who love Maui, it offers a unique view of the place as it is today. Woven into the plot (which is a page-turner in itself, with all kinds of plot turns and emotions) are descriptions that will ring true for those who live on or visit this wonderful island. Madge Walls is a true kamaaina, one born in the Islands of a family that has been here for long enough to really have a feel for the place, and it shows. This is not one of those novels written by someone who just flew in and was overwhelmed by the beauty and glamor of Hawaii; this writer really knows her setting. With that authentic understanding of island life, a great plot and characters, plus lots of info on the real estate business (who knew it was so challenging?), this novel is fun to read!

It's Worth the Price!

Set on the island of Maui, Madge Walls' novel has all the ingredients for trouble in paradise. Laura McDaniel's life is in shambles, and she finds herself Paying the Price for having a missing teenage daughter reappear after a three year absence, seven months pregnant; an ex-husband who left their "perfect" marriage for a younger woman; aging parents living in their past, and having to work as a Realtor to financially survive. Problem? Laura is a mother, and mothers aren't suppose to get angry or angst. Mothers are suppose to comfort their kids, their parents, their clients, their ex-husbands. Mothers are suppose to be responsible for everyone's well being, even if it means sacrificing their own. Madge Wall's Paying the Price is that story, and it's a page turner! I grew up in Hawaii and worked with runaways before becoming a Realtor. Paying the Price speaks nothing but the truth. Anyone who's experienced even one of the circumstances Laura confronts will identify with her. Besides being an excellent read, it brought back a lot of memories, highs and lows, of my own past. I couldn't put it down. I promise, you won't be sorry paying the price for a copy of your own. Laurie Ames Birnsteel Kahala
