The first set of essays in this volume focuses on changes in the Indian agrarian scene since the mid-sixties following the introduction of modern technology. These papers discuss the ensuing trends in production and prices and analyze the role of politics and the state with respect to price trends, and the economy in general. The second set of essays examines variation in the demographic structure of agrarian households, ranging from those of laborers and peasants to big landowning families. Although largely empirical in content, these studies also review some theoretical perspectives.
