Paul Sumwerth is a twenty five year old developmentally disabled man, raised by loving, overprotective parents in an upper income household. When the story begins, Paul labors in a boring job in a sheltered workshop. Paul's stutter ans slurred speech have kept him from making many close friends. His one true friend is his regional center counselor, April. Tragedy strikes when Paul's parents are killed in an auto accident. Paul's one sibling, Valerie, comes to California from the east coast to help him sort things out. She promptly moves in with her lover and business partner, Deena. Paul's life begins to change as he struggles to escape his cocoon and spread his wings to become a more complete and beautiful person. He battles his sibling, reconnects with his girlfriend, and begins to see more possibilities than he ever imagined before.
