Doreen Speckmann shares her amusing and adventurous techniques for creating millions of individualized quilt designs by playing with a small number of component parts. She takes readers through the steps she follows to develop her unique quilt patterns, shows us how to explore painlessly on our own, and shares her secrets of color selection and piecing tricks. Dorren also gives detailed instructions for four of her personal favorites.
Of books that teach (or purport to teach) creativity, I like this the best. Using a few simple blocks, and applying a few simple techniques to them, Doreen Speckman opens the door to limitless creativity. Helping us linear souls get the feeling we are, in fact, capable of flights of fancy is liberating.
I could never get my points to match until I read this book!

Doreen Speckman has a wonderful sense of humor about making quilts: "How many of us actually need the quilts we make? Ya got central heat?" This sense of fun, combined with her clear explanations and original approach to quilt design, raise "Pattern Play" a cut above most other quilt books. The hints on accurate piecing alone are worth the cost of the book. Beautiful color photos of many of Doreen's quilts make you want to run to the fabric store to start your next project.
