Primer for those interested in ornament

This is the first book that I have encountered that not only discusses the different variations of ornament but how they evolved from ancient sources (such as Greece, Persia, or earlier Sumerians, Assyrians)in a simple and coherent way. It is a good book with which to begin the study of ornament and patterns. As an artist it gave me insight into how others adapted and created patterns, and how I can also reinterpret ornamentation for my own uses. The book is full of illustrations that adptly show the author's ideas and progressions of ornament from ancient to modern. I highly recommend.
