The third earl of Southampton is better know for his patronage of William Shakespeare, but he was also one of the leading investors in the North American colonies in the early 17th century.

He was a talented man but he had a difficult relationship with Queen Elizabeth I and spent the last three years of her reign imprisoned in the Tower.

His fortunes changed when James I came to the throne and he held various lucrative offices. He developed iron mills on his estates at Beaulieu and Titchfield.
