Patrick J. Muillen began his life in Meath County, Ireland. He arrived in Boston in 1849 as a fifteen year old boy, responsible for two younger siblings, and his mother, who was pregnant. His father, Malachi, had died on board the ship, Townsend, one month before it docked in Boston. He labored in Lawrence, Massachusetts, dug a tunnel in New Jersey and finally spent most of his adult years as a miner of anthracite coal, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His story is documented with researched data of census, ship records, birth certificates and placed in the current events of the mid-nineteenth. century. He was my great grandfather. Great, he was.
