How can we begin to teach literacy to children with complex special educational needs who are not yet able to respond to formal instruction?' The Pathway to Phonics programme is delivered within a pre-formal, sensory curriculum and prepares pupils for future structured phonics instruction by raising awareness of: printed words and their relationship to the story, rhyme, poem or factual text being read, the sounds in spoken words (phonemes), the letters in written words (graphemes) and the key skills of isolating and identifying sounds in spoken words, blending in relation to reading and and segmenting spelling written words. Pathway to Phonics was subject to a pilot study over two terms with 59 children in 3 special schools, with the majority of pupils making significant progress.
