Black Elk, a Lakota Sioux warrior, has lost everything that mattered to him: his woman, his child, his village. As she fights to save his life, she also fights to save his soul, teaching him the message of God's love as taught in the Bible-an idea that is foreign to him. Jayne takes him back to the ranch to heal, and await her parents' home- coming from a long trip they have made for supplies. Black Elk's transforma- tion into a man of peace is not without cost: he must convince her parents that he is not a wild savage who wishes them harm, and must finally confront his mortal enemy whose son he has killed in his warrior past. With the help of Jayne's Uncle Will, who provides wonderful touches of humor once he ap- pears on the scene, a climactic scene reveals that killing destroys the soul. The young couple, who in a short time have endured much, live to see their dreams fulfilled in some surprising and fulfilling ways. Jayne is a woman of deep faith, courage and strength, and will be remembered long after the last page is turned.
