This may be the lowest point in the life of a man who lost both parents to suicide; who spends days and weeks mired in depression; who has multiple, overlapping anxiety disorders; whose girlfriend lives in an insane asylum; and who lives in Iowa.

Gaius Mahler stands accused of murdering one of his best friends, a crime he is relatively certain he did not commit. (Gaius won't rule it out completely- he knows he is more than a little nuts.) The police have locked him away in an oubliette, and out of the oubliette pour memories of both the past and the future, as if the oubliette itself were somehow unstuck in space and time. To make matters worse, Gaius's sole comfort while being locked away is the presence of the ghost or hallucination of Ottorino Respighi, the worst composer of all time.

As Gaius is trapped beyond time and space, his girlfriend Lenore finds herself on a journey of her own, an attempt to secure Gaius's freedom that will have fairly predictable, ironic results.
