Past Midnight Christmas
"Tell me you're happy in the city, Hal. Lie to me and tell me your life there is everything you wanted, and I'll let you walk out that door at sunrise without saying another word."
At 12:45 AM on Christmas morning, Hallie Price walks out the side door of her parents' house into the freezing night.
After four hours of listening to her family pick apart her career, her life choices, and her empty ring finger, she just needs to breathe. She leaves her phone on the kitchen counter, pulls her jacket tight, and follows the only light still glowing in town: the buzzing red neon sign of Callahan's 24-Hour Diner.
She expects a quiet cup of black coffee.
She does not expect Levi Callahan standing behind the counter.
Levi was her high school sweetheart, her first love, and the boy she abandoned three years ago when she bought a one-way bus ticket to Chicago. Now he has broader shoulders, silver rings on his calloused hands, and a look in his dark eyes that says he remembers every single promise she broke.
When a historic blizzard slams into upstate New York, the county sheriff declares an emergency travel ban. Route 9 is completely shut down.
Trapped together inside the warm, empty diner from 1:00 AM to sunrise, three years of silence begin to unravel over slices of warm pie, old jukebox records, and truths that cut too deep. Levi never sold the diner. He never left the town.
And he never stopped waiting for her to come home.
