Passing on the Baton: My Financial Journey

By Valerie Chanda Chibuye

What happens when poor financial decisions begin to affect not only individuals but entire families? In Passing on the Baton: My Financial Journey, Valerie Chanda Chibuye shares honest, practical, and deeply relatable lessons drawn from her own life experiences and the stories of people around her. Written in simple and accessible language, this book explores the realities of managing money in everyday life within the Zambian and African context.

Through powerful personal stories, the book discusses budgeting and spending habits, saving and investing, managing lump sums and separation packages, retirement and pension planning, mobile money and financial scams, family obligations and financial pressure, shopping smart and cutting household costs, building financial discipline and resilience.

From navigating periods of unemployment and raising school-going children, to building a home gradually and learning to survive financially difficult seasons, the author demonstrates that financial literacy is not only about numbers. It is about decisions, habits, and planning for the future.

This book is ideal for young adults starting their financial journey, employees and entrepreneurs, pensioners and widows managing lump sums, families seeking financial stability and anyone who wants to improve their relationship with money.

At its core, Passing on the Baton: My Financial Journey is a call to break cycles of dependency and build pathways toward financial independence and generational wealth. It is not about how much you earn, but how you manage what you have.
