Recognizing children's natural delight in rhyme and wordplay, poet and teacher Lee Bennett Hopkins suggests ways for educators to use nursery rhymes, jump-rope jingles, and songs as springboards to the enjoyment of poetry. He also introduces twenty-four modern children's poets, including Nikki Giovanni, Shel Silverstein, and Carl Sandburg, through brief biographies and helpful bibliographies. This indispensable volume concludes with numerous activities--many suggested and successfully used by educators in the classroom-to get children excited about and involved in reading, writing, and enjoying poetry. Pass the Poetry, Please has been a staple in classrooms and libraries across the country for over twenty-five years and has proven itself an invaluable resource. This new edition-revised, enlarged, and updated-contains a wealth of new ideas for bringing children and poetry together. So turn the page and learn how you can pass the poetry
I am working on designing a year-long poetry project with 3rd graders and after persuing a few books from the local library, this is the one I decided to purchase. It is separated into helpful sections including some short introductions to child-friendly poets, an overview of different poetry forms, and also some ideas for writing projects with the children in the development of their own poetry. This book will be a rich resource in planning out my lessons, and providing some framework for me to use in thinking about what I am trying to teach the children with my focus on poetry.
Must have for teachers

This was such an amazing book. As a teacher-in-training, after reading this book, I am so excited about teaching a genre that I have so much difficulty with. I wish my elementary school teachers had this book available to them. After the sections talking about how important poetry is in a child's life, the section on biographies are so useful, which have detailed info about some books by that author. The activities didn't seem very interesting. Because I plan to buy this book, I will mainly use it as a buying guide for poetry books for my classroom.
