With a deep respect for the feelings of the widows she interviewed, Maria Abbott brings to the page the full range of those feelings, from sorrow to humor, and the changes in life for those women. Giving them an opportunity to speak of their experience is probably a first for them, since society seldom wants to hear about someone else's potential pain and sorrow. That such pain and sorrow can, in itself, be healing and blessing, is well described by Abbott's skillful and gentle narration.
