Jessica Regan and Harold Bessemer are both popular personalities. The similarities end there. She's a liberal actress; he's a conservative talk show host. By chance, they take vacations in Switzerland and stay at the same hotel, where they're kidnapped and held for ransom. Despite their situation, they don't bond. The kidnappers are a diverse group: an almost-intellectual who wants the money to win back his girlfriend, a Black jazz musician living the blues (if not playing them), a young quasi-Muslim infatuated with the actress, and a recent escapee from a mental ward. The other characters include an impatient Swiss police captain, a nun who wants to be a revolutionary, newsmen of various persuasions, and an old woman pushing decrepitude but still dangerous. The action builds to chaos and convergence and an unexpected ending in the Alps.
