Evolution of a Great City

I was lucky enough to read this book before my first trip to Paris. It not only traces the history of a great city, but tells which are its greatest monuments and architectural innovations from Roman to modern times. It tells you which are still standing and which are open to the public. It takes the reader through the periods of the Bourbon Monarchy, Napoleon's empirialism and industrial revolution. I reread this every time I plan another trip to the Paris and cautiously loaned it to relatives until finally releasing my copy to a pair of newlyweds.
