This book is BRILLIANT. Dr. Heins realizes that many of us don't have time to sit and study parenting books. She uses a format whereby the main points are right at the top of each chapter, and if you see in there quickly what you were looking for information about, you often can be reassured without further fuss that your parenting is on the right track (or not!). She is not only an esteemed doctor, but the voice of an experienced mother. Her outlook is knowledgeable, sensible, and down to earth. If you had to choose only one parenting book to take with your children to a desert island, this one would be the most useful, efficient and with the most reasonable advice, by far. Ten stars to Dr. Heins!
Our Favorite Wedding Gift for Young People Merging Families

"ParenTips for Effective, Enjoyable Parenting" is our favorite wedding gift for young couples, each with a child or children, who are merging their respective families. Since each partner is sure to bring a different orientation to child-raising, discord or at least inconsistencies can follow. This is hard on kids. But help is at hand. Dr. Heins, a popular pediatrician and educator--as well as a cracker-jack mom--has put together a contemporary, effective, practical, and caring how-to-do-it book. She has some great guidelines on raising siblings. With "ParenTips" at their fingertips, newly-linked parents can be secure they are using common-sense approaches that work. A couple of bonuses: "ParenTips," is well-organized with a good index and fun to read. I've appreciated especially her "Sexuality/Gender" section. This is an large, awkward topic that is central to kids' understanding who they are. And it's a hard one for many parents to deal with adequately. But she shows you how to talk to kids about it in a matter-of-fact way that helps them appreciate that side of themselves.Perhaps it's because her philosophy agrees with mine, but when I look up a problem, I'm always wanting to say "Amen, Marilyn!"
Sensible and effective advice

This is the parenting book I recommend the most often to the parents of children I teach. Finding the topic that concerns a parent at the moment is easy, with suggestions for action given up front, and the developmental rationale and longterm suggestions following. Marilyn Heins speaks clearly, directly and sensibly to parents, giving them the support and confidence they need to be effective. In thirty years of work with young children, this is the most useful, practical and valuable book I can recommend to parents.

Much of my pediatric practice involves preventive care - including good parenting. As any parent of a toddler or teen knows, it's sometimes more challenging than we would like. ParenTips supplies advice on the more common parenting dilemmas in quickly accessed, concise format. Dr. Heins' approach to child care is a warm blend of professional knowledge, personal experience, common sense and humor. No household should be without a copy.
