This play is an adaptation of the paradox known as the prisoner's dilemma. At first glance, the audience may see no difficulty in the choice to be made--if the two prisoners cooperate, they will benefit by going free. But, as the situation unfolds in the visitor center of the jail, reason is replaced with doubt, and this fuels human emotions--confusion, distrust, and perhaps, dread. The result is a paradox that is not easily solved.
