This is a fractured memoir, steeped in the language and images Rogers was raised on: Kipling's Just So Stories, Dorothy Parker quips, song lyrics, Beat diatribes, the visual gymnastics of cummings, Victorian children's stories, fairy tales, and the crumbling beauty and very real danger of downtown Detroit. Rogers' writing is closely related to the lyrical tradition, though she's also interested in narrative, mystery, memory, and the possibilities for language to create an emotional effect on a reader. Rogers is drawn to the nature of utopian impulses -- from nineteenth century spiritual movements to 1960s radicalism to our hopes for Obama -- and the ways these impulses break down. Research subjects include: The Shakers, John Sinclair, the MC5, communes, hippie cookbooks, shamanism, Surrealism, Detroit and Joseph Cornell.
Paper Radio is truly the best book of new poetry I have ever read... insightful, evocative, and deeply personal. Ms. Rogers captures the reader, and slaps them around with imagery and emotion. A lot of modern poetry, at least to me is quite flat and one dimensional, Ms. Rogers takes you on a roller coaster ride of highs and lows, with lots of reflection on her young life. I found this after hearing her on an internet poetry reading, and decided it was a must buy, and the book doesn't disappoint. Not everything is for everyone, but just turn the page and you will be forced to face some truths about your own life. Enjoy it, I sure did.
At Times Surreal

This is a fantastic book from Damian Rogers. Paper Radio is at times surreal but most of all there are lasting images within these pages, almost as if it took a while to develop such a talent. Poems appeared in Maisonneuve, a respected magazine & there are a lot of characters & scenes to juggle. I am a big fan of this one.
