Kuo achieves in one book what many authors strive to do in a career. Panda Diaries is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for those who aren't curious. This book demands that the reader look more deeply into the complexities of China, and that the reader also see the idiocy of all governments - here in the US and abroad. As the fiasco that is the Iraq War lurches forward, and citizens are asked to support a policy that is not only unsupportable, but mysterious, Kuo's commentary about blind patriotism is clarion. We cannot use a Western lens to view China with - nor can we critique China without first cleaning up our own atrocities. And like some good 12-step programs indicate, we need to first admit we have committed them...
