A young Texas man, Sam Houston Hatfield, moves to Panama to work on the canal in the late 1800's. The French are in charge of the initial work. Along the way Sam finds sex, love, and adventure. Returning home on the shores of Galveston Bay to his beloved San Leon becomes too risky for Sam in the wake of a murder investigation so he must make a new life among the jungles of Panama.
