How Did the First Islamic Cities Emerge and Evolve Over Time? This book dismantles the myth of the static, 'timeless' medina, reconstructing the transformation of cities conquered by Muslims as well as the early Islamic foundations. Through significant archaeological discoveries in Spain and Portugal--many unpublished or little known--it identifies the principles that guided their urban evolution. Rather than simply narrating the history of a city, it proposes dynamic interpretive models based on four decades of archaeological research, Arabic texts, and ethnoarchaeological studies.
