Walter Ash runs a small used bookstore. He pours tea that is always too hot. He does not chase customers. He waits.
A woman named Sky ducks in on a break and swears she is not a reader. Walter hands her a book called Lost Love and tells her she can pay later, or not at all. She opens it and finds her own street, her own phrases, and a meeting that has not happened yet.
A teenage boy steals a thin novel. A priest buys a book with no title. A bass player pays a dollar for a song that already lives in his head. A child asks for a story that is not sad. A neighbor wants one straight answer after a man walks out of the shop and does not walk far.
The books do not preach. They do not explain. They leave with the hands that take them. Sometimes the next page is a kindness. Sometimes it is a choice. Sometimes it changes when a person puts the brick down.
Pages is a novel about a shop that looks ordinary from the sidewalk, and about the people who find out that paper can know a Tuesday before it arrives. Sky wants her real life back, not a cleaner one the book thinks she should trade for. Walter says he only sells books. Then a volume appears on the counter with his own name on it.
