Pacific Electric Railway Guide: Stations, Stops & Depots

This digital recreation is a scan of a Xerox copy believed to be an original publication of the Pacific Electric Railway. The exact source of this journal is unknown at this time. The only date accompanying this work is October 27, 1903 and seems to refer to a patent date rather than a publication date. This book lists every station, stop and depot on the Pacific Electric Railway around the time of 1914. It also lists major attractions, buildings, clubs, schools, churches and recreational areas on or adjacent to the Pacific Electric Railway lines. O. A. (Oscar) Smith, whose name appears on the cover of this book, was not employed by the P.E. until 1909 and did not become Passenger Traffic Manager until 1914. He stayed at that position until he was promoted to Traffic Manager in 1922, so it stands to reason this guide was printed sometime between 1914 and that date. While scanning all 261 pages there were other indications of a likely publishing date. One good clue in the directory section, on page 229, lists Los Angeles High School's address as 4900 Country Club Drive instead of 4650 Olympic Boulevard - its present day address. Since Olympic Boulevard wasn't completely finished until after 1940, and by the date of O.A. Smith's tenure as Passenger Traffic Manager, we can conclude this publication was indeed produced sometime between 1914 and 1922. A Herculean effort was made to sharpen and improve the typeface readability of this digital reproduction. Sharpening, increasing contrast, restoring missing words and letters and the removal of unreadable handwritten notes was done throughout during the reformatting process. Each page has been enlarged to fit on standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper for easier reading and consistent printing quality. Some of the legible handwritten notes have been deciphered and retained. They are contained within parentheses and only occur a few times as on pages 182 and 202. The Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society makes this booklet available is to assist current and future researchers who have an interest in knowing more about the stations, stops and the surrounding communities the Pacific Electric served during its time as the largest interurban system in the world. - Steve Crise, Archivist, PERyhs.org. 2022.
