Pacific Carrier: Saga Of The USS Yorktown CV-10 In WW II is researched and written by Reuben P. Kitchen, Jr. (whose father served aboard the Yorktown in the West Pacific during World War II). This is the compelling story of a warship that carried the fight to Japan after the first Yorktown CV-5 was destroyed at the Battle of Midway. Focusing especially upon the strenuous efforts of the air crews and sailors, Pacific Carrier is a dramatic, attention captivating, highly recommended presentation of the real-life struggle to survive during war on the high seas.
PACIFIC CARRIER

Pacific Carrier by Ruben P Kitchen Jr. is a history of two American aircraft carriers: USS Yorktown (CV5) sunk at Midway, and its replacement namesake USS Yorktown (CV10) which served through the remainder of WW2, Korea and Vietnam before being preserved on public display as a memorial at Charleston. The Essex class Yorktown (CV10) with its newly trained Air Group 5 operating Hellcats, Helldivers and Avengers entered "Indian Country" to attack Marcus and Wake Islands in August and October 1943 respectively. These early nuisance raids gave its Air Group valuable experience and from that point on the Yorktown was seriously at war. An extensive career followed in most important actions of the latter part of the war in which the "Fighting Lady" was known as an eager ship and a lucky one, suffering only one bomb hit for the entire war. The documentary "The Fighting Lady" was filmed from her decks as was the film "Jet Fighter". This is an excellent, well written factual book providing much insight into US carrier operations of the Pacific War. A must read for anyone wanting to get the feel of the flight deck and of the air war.
History of CV-10 USS Yorktown
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 28 years ago
This book covers the history of the USS Yorktown, CV-10, from its construction to its final place as a floating museum. In the history is the U.S. entry into WWII at Pearl Horbor and the destruction of the first carrier to have the name Yorktown in the Battle of Midway. Although the tone of the book has the sound of a bedtime story (which is why it rates a 7 at max.) it gives the feel for being one of the crew as names are frequently mentioned and repeated. Even if the writing is not the greatest in quality, the story itself is very good, especially to those who have an interest in U.S. Navy history of WWII.
