Pablo: The Boy Who Made the Violin Dance

By Elizabeth A. Faidley

Meet Pablo de Sarasate, the boy who made the violin dance.

Born in Pamplona, Spain, in 1844, Pablo grew up surrounded by music. His father was a military bandmaster, and Pablo began playing the violin when he was very young. Before long, his extraordinary talent became impossible to ignore.

As a boy, Pablo traveled to Paris to study at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire, where he went on to win its Premier Prix in violin. From there, his violin carried him across Europe and the Americas, transforming him into one of the greatest violin virtuosos of the nineteenth century.

But Pablo was more than a brilliant performer. He brought the rhythms, dances, colors, and energy of Spain into the concert hall. His music could sing, race, laugh, leap, and dance. He composed dazzling works such as Zigeunerweisen and Carmen Fantasy, while inspiring composers including Camille Saint-Sa ns and douard Lalo to write music especially for him.

Young readers will discover the remarkable person behind the famous name, learn how dedication and practice can make the impossible look effortless, and explore the music that continues to challenge and delight violinists today.

Filled with engaging storytelling, illustrations, listening suggestions, musical history, and fascinating facts, Pablo: The Boy Who Made the Violin Dance introduces children to classical music in a lively and accessible way.

Part of the Little Composer Books series, this true story shows that great musicians were once children too, and that even the most astonishing music begins slowly, one note at a time.
