In the spring of 1946, the author has just turned 21 when he is promoted to 1st Radio Officer/Purser of the Liberty Ship Samnesse which, after a short voyage to the Continent, sets out for Greece. The crew are predominantly young, and as the War is not long over, there is a happy feeling on board. After Piraeus, the ship goes tramping, first carrying South African Army vehicles from Genoa to Durban and then up and down the coast of East Africa loading and discharging coal at various ports between Durban and Port Said. The author describes his experiences, such as his day at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, the Durban July Handicap, collecting marine specimens at Djibouti, Christmas in Tanga and seeing Field Marshal Kesselring in Venice.
