Baggs resorts to having an untrained acquaintance set his arm. His left arm heals improperly, leaving Baggs unable to play piano. Without a means of making any more money, the Baggers family is facing starvation. Desperate, Baggs then signs up to compete in a game show called "Outlive" in which contestants from different parts of New Rome are paid to fight, often to the death, in the Colosseum before hundreds of thousands of fans.
